The Best Restaurants in Nob Hill, Michelin to Trattoria

Nob Hill's dining does not sit at the crown of the hill. The strongest tables cluster along its Polk and Van Ness edges, on Sacramento, Sutter, Bush, Van Ness, and Taylor Streets, and all five places below are within roughly a 10-minute walk of the Fairmont. That is the useful thing to know about this neighborhood: the distance from a two-Michelin-star tasting room to a candlelit walk-in trattoria is a few blocks, not a cab ride.

So this guide is ordered by how far ahead you have to plan rather than by a ranking. Two names carry the neighborhood for a booked-ahead occasion, one is the quality table you can usually still get this week, one is the splurge you schedule around, and one is the weeknight dinner you walk into. Each entry carries what we could verify and, just as usefully, what we could not.

1. Acquerello

Acquerello is a two-Michelin-star Italian fine-dining institution in Nob Hill/Polk Gulch, run since 1989 by chef Suzette Gresham and front-of-house partner Giancarlo Paterlini out of a converted chapel, and widely treated as San Francisco's benchmark for formal Italian tasting-menu dining.

This is the neighborhood's formal pinnacle, and it has been for a long time. Suzette Gresham and Giancarlo Paterlini have run Acquerello out of a converted chapel on Sacramento Street since 1989, and the room has held Michelin stars for nearly two decades, two of them in the 2026 guide. Choose it when the occasion deserves the most decorated kitchen in Nob Hill and when the evening has no hard stop after it. The encouraging part for anyone planning late: OpenTable showed tables open for the same night we checked, so a same-week reservation here is more realistic than the reputation suggests.

  • Holds two Michelin stars in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide USA.
  • OpenTable showed reservation slots available for the same night we checked, which points to normal booking availability rather than a months-out wait.

Closed Sunday and Monday. The tasting menu runs 2 to 4.5 hours, so it suits an unhurried evening only. Cannot accommodate vegan or strict gluten-free diners. Some 2024-2026 reviews debate whether the food still merits two stars.

2. Liholiho Yacht Club

Liholiho Yacht Club is chef Ravi Kapur's decade-plus-running Nob Hill restaurant serving heritage-driven cooking that fuses his Native Hawaiian, Chinese, and Indian roots with California technique, a buzzy, celebratory dinner-only spot, not a quiet tasting-menu room.

871 Sutter St, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA | $$$$ | american, asian, bar, californian, seafood

If Acquerello is the neighborhood's formal answer, Ravi Kapur's Sutter Street dining room is its most distinctive one. The cooking pulls his Native Hawaiian, Chinese, and Indian roots through California technique, and a decade in, critics still describe it as singular: Eater's 2026 look back concluded there is no comparable competitor in the city, and The Infatuation still calls it a bucket-list restaurant. Take it for a celebration or a date night with some noise in it, not for a conversation you need to hear every word of. Book on Resy when the window opens 30 days out at 10 pm, and if you are deciding late, check anyway: the day we looked, bar seats and a 9 pm table were both still there.

  • Eater's 2026 "10 years later" dining report concludes it remains a singular, worthy visit with no comparable competitor in the city.
  • The Infatuation frames it as a "bucket-list restaurant" a decade running.
  • Reservations open 30 days ahead at 10 pm, walk-in seating is available, and the cancellation policy is a strict 24 hours.
  • Resy showed same-day availability for that night, including bar seats and a 9 pm table.

The room gets loud when full, making cross-table conversation difficult. Peak-time reservations can require booking weeks ahead despite same-day scraps. Limited dedicated vegetarian options on a compact menu.

3. Harris' Restaurant - The San Francisco Steakhouse

Harris' Restaurant is a family-owned, old-school Van Ness Ave steakhouse open since 1984, built around dry-aged Midwestern Angus and A5 Wagyu beef, nightly live jazz in the bar, and a wood-paneled dining room that trades on nearly a half-century of "if these walls could talk" history. It sits at the top tier of SF steakhouse rankings by review volume and score (Google 4.7/1,447, TripAdvisor 4.4/927, #2 on a "50 best steakhouses in San Francisco" list).

2100 Van Ness Ave, San Francisco, CA 94109, USA | $$$$ | american, bar, dessert

Harris' is the one on this list you can usually still get, often a day out, which is most of why it belongs here. It is also the classic San Francisco steakhouse in every other respect: family-owned on Van Ness since 1984, leather booths, wood paneling, dry-aged Midwestern Angus and A5 Wagyu, and live jazz in the bar every night. Reviewers call the prime rib the best and describe the steaks as cooked to perfection across repeat visits. The jazz is worth a word for anyone hosting: multiple reviewers say the volume is pitched just right, present in the room without running over the conversation at the table. That combination, a bookable table and a room you can talk in, is why it suits business dinners and traditional celebrations.

  • Prime rib, filet mignon, ribeye, and creamed spinach draw consistent five-star praise, with reviewers calling the prime rib "the best" and describing steaks "cooked to perfection" across multiple visits.
  • Live jazz runs nightly in the bar area, with a named trio on Thursdays, and multiple reviewers note the volume is "pitched just right," audible and atmospheric without overwhelming conversation at the table.
  • Open Tuesday through Sunday for dinner and closed Monday, with reservations by OpenTable or phone.

Value is the weakest dimension, with some reviewers finding the prices unjustified. Officially not vegetarian-friendly, which limits mixed-diet parties. No view beyond the street.

4. Restaurant Naides

Restaurant Naides is a Filipino fine-dining tasting-menu restaurant in Nob Hill, San Francisco, run by chef Patrick Gabon and partner Celine Wuu, blending Filipino flavors with California-seasonal and New Nordic techniques. It occupies the former Sons & Daughters space on Bush Street and had earned a Top 25 SF badge and a 9.4 rating from The Infatuation within roughly its first year.

The most exciting new tasting menu in the city happens to be in Nob Hill, in the old Sons & Daughters space on Bush Street. Patrick Gabon and Celine Wuu run a Filipino fine-dining counter there that blends Filipino flavors with California-seasonal and New Nordic technique, and within roughly its first year The Infatuation gave it a 9.4 and a place on its Top 25 SF list. The catch is the obvious one for a room this new: every seat was sold out on Tock when we checked. Treat Naides as a target you plan around, watch Tock for released slots, and keep Harris' or Acquerello in your pocket for the night you actually need a table.

  • The Infatuation rates it 9.4 and includes it in its Top 25 SF list.
  • All reservations were sold out on Tock at the time of checking.

Sold out at the time of checking; booking requires watching Tock for released slots. Closed Monday and Tuesday, with a single roughly two-hour dinner seating on open nights. Tasting menu only, no a la carte option, and dinner for two with pairings approaches $1,000.

5. Nob Hill Cafe

Nob Hill Cafe is a small, family-run, walk-in-only Italian trattoria on Taylor St near the Fairmont and Grace Cathedral, serving classic cream-sauced pastas, pizza, and homemade focaccia in a candlelit, old-school room.

Every neighborhood with four expensive restaurants needs one of these, and Nob Hill's is a small, candlelit, family-run trattoria on Taylor Street near the Fairmont and Grace Cathedral. The kitchen does classic cream-sauced pastas, pizza, and homemade focaccia; the Penne Bettola, a vodka cream sauce with a light kick, gets called a crowd-pleaser and a top seller often enough to be the default order. It is the unpretentious, moderately priced dinner on this list, and the price of that is the door policy: no reservations through any channel, walk-in only. Go early or plan on waiting.

  • A small, family-run Italian trattoria on Taylor St near the Fairmont and Grace Cathedral, serving classic pastas, pizza, and homemade focaccia in a candlelit, old-school room.
  • The Penne Bettola, a vodka cream sauce with a light kick, is repeatedly called a crowd-pleaser and a top seller.
  • No reservations are taken by any channel: the restaurant is walk-in only.

Its current status is unverified: we could not complete a live status check for this request, so confirm it is open and its hours directly before going. Walk-in-only policy means unpredictable waits at peak and pre-theater times. The room is extremely tight, and groups above four have materially worse experiences. Some 2025-2026 reviews report uneven food and service on off nights.

View on Google MapsNotes updated August 3, 2026

One practical note before you pick: Monday thins this list badly. Acquerello is closed Sunday and Monday, Harris' is closed Monday, and Naides is closed Monday and Tuesday. If the date is fixed before the restaurant is, read the closing days first and the cuisine second.

The short version: Acquerello and Liholiho are the two names that matter most for a booked-ahead occasion, Harris' is the reliable same-week table, Naides is the splurge you plan around, and Nob Hill Cafe covers the casual weeknight.
