Eating Alone in Mangwon: Four Seoul Counters Built for One
Mangwon-dong, in Mapo-gu, is one of the easier Seoul neighborhoods in which to eat alone. The rooms are small, the menus are short, and several of them seat you at a bar facing a wall rather than across an empty table. Nobody makes an occasion of a single diner here.
Four picks follow, all in Mangwon-dong proper and walkable from Mangwon Station. They run from the most certain to the least: a 40-year single-dish canteen we could confirm is open, then a bar-seat yukgaejang shop, a small Japanese counter, and a one-person gukbap kitchen. The last three were researched live from current listings and reviews rather than from an operator record, so their status is unverified and each card says so.
1. Ildeung Sikdang
일등식당 (Ildeung Sikdang) is a ~40-year-old single-dish canteen in Mangwon-dong that has served only one thing since 1986: ppyeo-haejangguk (뼈해장국, pork/ox-bone hangover soup) . It has become a broadcast-circuit fixture: 백종원의 3대천왕, 허영만의 백반기행, 성시경 먹을텐데, 전현무계획3, and the drama 우리들의 블루스 (with Shin Min-a and Lee Byung-hun eating there) have all featured it, and it carries the city's "오래가게" (heritage shop) designation .

The anchor of the list, and the only one of the four we could confirm is open. It has sold exactly one thing since 1986: ppyeo-haejangguk, the pork and ox-bone hangover soup, at 8,000 KRW for a regular bowl. Because there is nothing else to cook, the soup lands within minutes of the order. Solo diners are routine rather than tolerated, and staff will put a single guest at a shared table when the room fills. Forty years in Mangwon-dong, a Seoul Historical Store certification and a long run of television appearances, and it is still one dish at a canteen price.
- Solo diners are common and comfortable here, and staff will seat single guests at shared tables when needed.
- One dish, two sizes: ppyeo-haejangguk in regular (보통, 8,000 KRW) or large (특, 11,000 KRW).
- The single pre-prepped dish means fast turnover, with food typically arriving within minutes of ordering.
- Weekday off-peak visits, mid-afternoon or early evening, report walking straight in with no wait.
- Verified open as of May 2026 and certified as a Seoul Historical Store (Oraegage) with a 40-year history in Mangwon-dong; it accepts reservations through AutoReserve and opens at 08:30.
Closed every Monday, and the operator record shows Chuseok holiday closures on 9/24-9/26. The shop routinely sells out and closes before posted hours, so go earlier in the day. Weekend prime times can mean 20-30 minute waits with no queue system. One dish only: if pork and ox-bone hangover soup is not what you want, there is no alternative.

2. 육장 망원동
망원동
If you would rather not share a table at all, this is the room designed around that preference: every seat is a bar seat facing the wall. Diningcode tags it for solo dining and bar tables, and a visitor puts it plainly, all the seats face the wall, so it is good for eating alone. The kitchen works in yukgaejang, with a tomato version as the signature, and bowls sit in the 10,000 to 12,000 KRW band. Ordering runs through a kiosk and rice is self-serve, which is about as frictionless as a table for one gets. We researched this one live rather than from an operator record, so read the caveats before you go.
- Diningcode tags 육장 for 혼밥 (solo dining) and 바테이블 (bar table), and a quoted visitor review describes the layout as all wall-facing seats: '모두 벽면 바라보는 좌석이라 혼밥하기 좋다' (all seats face the wall, so it is good for eating alone).
- Live profile hours: daily 11:00 to 20:00, break time 15:00 to 17:00, last order 19:40.
- The menu centers on yukgaejang (10,000 KRW), tomato yukgaejang (12,000 KRW), yuk-ramyeon (11,000 KRW) and yukgal-tang (15,000 KRW).
- Recent visitor reviews report the shop moved within Mangwon-dong to Poeun-ro 75, 1st floor, opposite the Obok seafood market, and that ordering is by kiosk with self-serve rice.
Current status is unverified: our verification check this turn returned no confirmation, so reliance is on the live Diningcode profile and 2026 visitor reviews rather than an operator record. Popular at peak hours: a 2026 weekend review found it nearly full right at 11:00 opening, so aim for opening or mid-afternoon. Break time 15:00-17:00, and older reviews note it can close early before the break when ingredients run out.

3. 키타미 망원동
망원동
The Japanese counter on the list, and a tight one. Diningcode lists it as a Mangwon-dong okonomiyaki and yakisoba restaurant, and a reviewer describes the whole space as bar tables, good for eating alone, with the katsu sando as the order to make. The yakisoba draws praise too. The trade-off is capacity: a handful of bar seats and reported waits mean the hour you pick decides the visit. This one was researched live as well, and its current hours could not be confirmed.
- A Diningcode reviewer describes the room as all bar seating and good for solo dining: '식당 분위기도 전석 바테이블로 혼밥하기도 좋다' (the whole restaurant is bar tables, so it is good for eating alone), and names the katsu sando as a must-order.
- Diningcode lists 키타미 as a Mangwon-dong okonomiyaki and yakisoba restaurant.
Current status is unverified: our verification check this turn returned no confirmation, and current hours could not be confirmed, so check recent reviews or its Instagram before going. The room is bar seating only with a handful of seats, and reviewers report waits, so off-peak timing matters.

4. 송정 망원동
망원동
The quietest pick, and the thinnest on verification, kept on the list because it is the only gukbap in Mangwon proper. A local food blog knows it for clear-broth pork gukbap served toruem-style, and notes that the owner runs the place alone. One person in the kitchen sets the terms: a small room, and slower service once it fills. Confirm it is open before you make a special trip.
- A local food blog describes it as '서울 망원동 돼지국밥' that is '토렴해서 나온 맑은 국물의 돼지국밥으로 정말 유명해요' (famous for its clear-broth pork gukbap served toruem-style).
- The same blog adds '송정은 사장님이 혼자 운영하는 1인 매장이에요' (Songjeong is a one-person shop run by the owner alone).
Current status is unverified: researched live from a single blog source, and hours, break times and current operation could not be confirmed, so confirm before a special trip. A one-person kitchen means limited seats and slower service when busy.

One practical pattern runs through all four: go early or go mid-afternoon. The canteen sells out and closes before its posted hours, the yukgaejang shop was nearly full at opening on a weekend and breaks from 15:00 to 17:00, and the Japanese counter has only a handful of seats.
If none of the four fit, the strongest solo options one neighborhood over in Hapjeong are Menya Hanabi, a mazesoba counter with kiosk ordering, and Sekai No Hate No Ramen, which offers counter seats and power outlets pitched at solo diners. Both are about 10 to 15 minutes on foot. Heki, back in Mangwon, serves excellent hire-katsu with bar seats built for solo diners, but waits of 1 to 3.5 hours and a Monday and Tuesday closure keep it off the main list.
