Seoul Izakayas for Drinking Alone: Four Counter Seats

Drinking alone in Seoul is a counter problem, not a restaurant problem. The seat that decides the evening is the one facing the charcoal or the open kitchen, where one order and one glass look entirely ordinary and there is something to watch between bites. These four izakayas solve that in four different ways: two charcoal counters, one quiet room you book in advance, and one place that has turned solo drinking into a set menu.

The practical differences matter more than the menus. Three of the four are closed on Sundays, and Zaruyaki Yongsan-ro is the one that stays open late on a weekend. Dongari Jeongdong has stopped serving dinner altogether. Minimum orders, table time limits and price bands vary widely, so each pick below carries the caveats straight from our research notes rather than a smoothed-over version of them.

1. Miyazaki Sangjeom

미야자키상점 (Miyazaki Sangjeom) is a semi-basement Japanese yakitori izakaya on a Yeonnam/Donggyo-dong side street in Mapo-gu, built around bincho-tan (비장탄) charcoal-grilled chicken skewers served at a dachi counter bar and back tables.

A semi-basement room on a Yeonnam side street, described as small and cozy, built around bincho-tan charcoal chicken skewers. The dachi counter bar is the seat to want and the first one taken, which tells you both that it is the good seat and that arriving late costs you it. One reviewer wished the place were closer to home, specifically because it suits casual solo drinking. Order tsukune and grilled mentaiko, and expect premium shochu rather than a cheap soju night.

  • One reviewer wished the venue were closer to home specifically because it suits casual solo drinking.
  • The dachi counter bar is the most in-demand seating and fills first.
  • Half a level underground, and described as small and cozy.

Premium pricing: drinks and 2-piece skewers run over 10,000 won each, and regular soju is not on the menu. Hours conflict across sources (Naver lists closed Sunday and Monday, another guide lists closed Monday and Tuesday), so confirm same-day before going. Walk-in only with variable waits; the counter seats go first.

A Japanese izakaya on Yongridan-gil (Yongsan) built around "zaruyaki", charcoal-grilled chicken specialty cuts finished tableside, alongside nabe hot pots, oden, and highballs, styled with vintage-audio, wood-tone Japanese-alley atmosphere.

The weekend pick: of the four here it is the one open on a Sunday, and it runs late on weekends. Counter seats face the open kitchen, so a solo drinker has the charcoal work to watch, and the second floor has bar seating as the other one-person option. The house highball comes up across visit after visit as the right match for the grilled dishes, which is the endorsement that matters when the drink is the point. Know the order structure before you sit down: a first zaruyaki order takes a minimum of two cuts, and each table orders at least one drink per person.

  • Solo diners are handled by the counter seats at the open kitchen or the bar seating on the second floor.
  • The house highball is mentioned across multiple visits as a strong match for the grilled dishes.
  • A first zaruyaki order requires a minimum of two cuts, and each table is required to order at least one drink per person.

The two-cut minimum on a first skewer order may be more food than a light solo drinker wants. Weekday evenings fill quickly; booking ahead via Naver reservation is recommended, though our check found no sellout pattern.

3. Orot Robata

오롯 로바타 is a Japanese dining-izakaya on the Gyeongui Line Forest Path near Gongdeok Station, the second location of the "오롯" fine-dining family, running affordable seafood donburi at lunch and a pricier robata/sashimi izakaya menu at night. It has been recognized by the Blue Ribbon Survey for multiple consecutive years (sources report anywhere from 3 to 5 straight years depending on when the post was written).

The quiet one. Orot Robata is a compact, modern room near Gongdeok where the counter facing the open kitchen is repeatedly called the best seat in the house, partly for the show of watching chefs cook and plate, partly because it does not feel like a long wait. The interior is described as clean and toned down rather than a loud drinking den, which is the right setting for a slow highball and sashimi on your own. It is also small: one visitor sized it at roughly five tables plus four counter seats, so treat the reservation as part of the plan.

  • Clean, toned-down and modern rather than a loud drinking-den izakaya, with an open kitchen that lets diners watch chefs cook and plate.
  • One visitor sized the room at roughly five tables plus four counter/bar seats, with bar seats capped at two people per seat except one corner seat that fits three.

Only about 10 seats total, and reservations are functionally required; walking in almost guarantees a wait. A hard 2.5-hour table limit is enforced when there is a waitlist, so it is not a linger-all-night solo drinking spot. Closed Sundays. Dinner pricing runs 25,000 to 70,000 won for mains and sashimi.

4. Dongari Jeongdong

동아리 정동본점 (Dongari Jeongdong) is a Japanese-run izakaya on Jeongdong-gil, in Seoul's Jung District, that has deliberately dropped dinner service in favor of weekday lunch sets and a dedicated "day-drinking" (낮술) window built around draft Asahi and highballs. It is run by a Japanese owner/operator (사장님, referred to across sources as Matsumoto) whose staff is largely Japanese, giving the room an unusually authentic, "actually in Japan" feel that repeat visitors call out specifically.

The only place here with a solo drinking set built on purpose: one drink of your choice plus three mini side dishes for 15,900 won, repeatedly called good value. The room is Japanese-run, and multiple visitors independently describe it as convincingly Japanese in feel, helped by walls of premium Japanese whisky on display near the bar. The catch is the clock. Dongari now runs daytime only, so this is a weekday afternoon at the counter, not an evening out.

  • Solo lunch or day-drinking on weekdays is the venue's designed use case, with a dedicated solo set and counter seating built for exactly this.

As of March 2026 it is daytime only: lunch 11:30 to 14:00 and day drinking 14:00 to 18:00, with no evening izakaya service. Closed Saturday, Sunday, and public holidays, so it is not a weekend option. Table time is capped at 1 to 1.5 hours from first order, and the day-drinking window takes no reservations and often has a waitlist.

For the classic version, an evening at a charcoal counter, start with Miyazaki Sangjeom or Zaruyaki Yongsan-ro. For a quiet seat you have reserved in advance, Orot Robata. For a weekday afternoon with a set built for one person, Dongari Jeongdong. On a Sunday, Zaruyaki is the only one of the four that will let you in.
