Hanwoo Omakase in Seoul: Four Beef Counters Worth Booking

Hanwoo omakase, 우마카세 in the local shorthand, is Seoul's answer to the sushi counter. One fixed course, a small room, and somebody else deciding which cut of Korean beef you eat next and in what order. A server usually does the grilling, so the meal moves at the kitchen's pace rather than yours, and the beef gets more attention than it would at a group table where everyone is reaching for the tongs.

The four counters below are not interchangeable, and the price spread alone is wide: a hall course under 60,000 KRW at one end, a special-occasion room several times that at the other. The reasons to go differ just as much. One is the full nose-to-tail version that a solo diner can actually book, one is the value entry point, one is theater in a Hannam-dong basement, and one is a six-seat bar built around a single bite. The caveats under each are from our research notes, printed as we found them rather than smoothed over.

1. Ushiya

Ushiya (우시야 본점) is a Japanese-style, individual-grill hanwoo (Korean beef) omakase counter in the Apgujeong/Sinsa area of Gangnam, serving a nose-to-tail course of specialty cuts grilled tableside by staff . It was featured on the Korean food TV program *Sooyomisikhwe* (수요미식회) and the founder previously worked as a Japanese-cuisine chef before opening it, which shows in the per-cut sauce pairings and tableside service style .

Start here if you want the long version of the form. Ushiya is a Japanese-style counter in the Apgujeong and Sinsa blocks of Gangnam where staff work an individual grill in front of you, running hanwoo specialty cuts in sequence: beef sashimi, then tongue, tenderloin, striploin, the skirt and hanging cuts, an ox tail grill, and usually tripe, rice, and a stew to close. The founder cooked Japanese food before opening this, which shows in the sauce paired to each cut and in how the service is handled at the table. The item reviewers keep coming back to is the tongue, described as melting on contact and better than tongue they have had in Japan. It is also the rare beef course here a solo diner can simply book: there is no two-person minimum, and reviewers say the counter does not make one guest feel conspicuous.

  • A Japanese-style, individual-grill hanwoo omakase counter in the Apgujeong and Sinsa area of Gangnam, with specialty cuts grilled tableside by staff.
  • The course runs beef sashimi, beef tongue (우설), tenderloin (안심), striploin (채끕), skirt and hanging cuts, and ox tail grill (소꼬리구이), often finishing with tripe, rice, and a stew.
  • Multiple independent reviewers single out the beef tongue, calling it better than tongue they have had in Japan.
  • There is no two-person minimum on the course, and reviewers say eating alone at the counter does not feel out of place.

Reservation is effectively mandatory; walk-ins are frequently refused. The brand has expanded to multiple branches (Seongsu, Gyodae and others), so confirm you are booking the Dosan-daero main branch. Parking is paid valet only, 5,000 KRW per 2 hours.

The Damwoo (더담우) is a chef's-counter hanwoo/wagyu beef omakase ("우마카세") restaurant in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, built around a fixed grilled-beef tasting course served from an open kitchen facing the diners .

The least expensive way into the format, and the one to send a first-timer to. The Damwoo is a chef's-counter beef omakase in Yeongdeungpo, a fixed grilled-beef tasting course served from an open kitchen that faces the diners. A Seoul value roundup lists it at 77,000 KRW per person for 300g, open daily from 17:00 to 21:30, booked through Catchtable or in person. Reviewers reach for the same word, 가성비, good value measured against what a Seoul beef omakase usually costs, and for the same dish: the 한우 미나리 육회, where the minari fragrance and the fresh yukhoe land together. Two practical notes before you commit. The room is a compact bar counter that does not take groups much above four, and the address inside Acro Tower Square is reported over and over as hard to find.

  • The 한우 미나리 육회 is the most consistently singled-out dish, minari fragrance and fresh yukhoe melting together.
  • Reviewers repeatedly describe it as 가성비, good value relative to typical Seoul beef omakase pricing.

Compact bar-counter room; groups above roughly 4 do not fit. Hours and seating structure have shifted several times across 2023 to 2026, so confirm the current seating times when you book. The location inside Acro Tower Square is repeatedly reported as hard to find.

3. Isog Uhwa

이속우화 (Isog-Uhwa) is a Hannam-dong hanwoo (Korean premium beef) course house that plates a fixed, dinner-only "맡김차림" (chef's-choice course) at 59,000 KRW a head, marketed by the community as a "우마카세" (beef omakase) and, unusually for the neighborhood, as a value pick despite Google's $$$$ price tag . Its signature hook is a theatrical reveal of the day's 1++ BMS9 hanwoo presented inside a Louis Vuitton trunk before a server grills it tableside for you .

The one that is fun before it is serious. In a Hannam-dong basement room, the day's 1++ BMS9 hanwoo is presented inside a Louis Vuitton trunk, revealed at the table, and then grilled for you by a server. The course keeps five beats: a savory seasoned 육회, two cuts of 오늘의 한우구이, a 한우버거 with fries, 제철 솔밥 with 된장찌개, and a seasonal ice cream to finish. Catchtable puts the hall course at 59,000 KRW a head with seatings at 17:30 and 19:30, one bottle of corkage free per party, and a room course at 150,000 KRW. Theater at a price the community treats as a value pick is exactly why this is the hardest table on the list: slots open monthly on the 21st at 17:00 and are contested hard. Book it for a date, not for a long dinner, and expect to add a paid cut if two modest servings of beef will not do.

  • Five course beats: 감칠맛 양념 육회, 오늘의 한우구이 in two cuts, 한우버거 and fries, 제철 솔밥 with 된장찌개, and a 제철 아이스크림 finish.
  • Catchtable lists the hall course at 59,000 KRW per person and the room course at 150,000 KRW, with 17:30 and 19:30 seatings and one free bottle of corkage per party.
  • The community markets it as a 우마카세 and, unusually for the neighborhood, as a value pick.

Booking is highly competitive: our verification found monthly slots released on the 21st at 17:00 via Catchtable are contested fiercely, so set a reminder. Portions run light: only two modest beef cuts, and many diners add paid cuts (30,000 KRW extra) to feel full. The meal is a brisk roughly 90 minutes with hard turn times, not a lingering omakase. Dinner only, in a windowless basement room; parties of 5 or more must split or book the 150,000 KRW room course.

4. W Gana

W가나 (also written 우가나) is a dinner-only hanwoo (Korean beef) omakase counter in a Sinsa-dong/Apgujeong Rodeo alley building, running a single fixed course that mixes grilled beef cuts with seafood and finishes with rice/soup and dessert .

South Korea, Seoul, Gangnam District, Sinsa-dong, Dosan-daero 49-gil, 20 2층 | $$$$ | japanese

Six seats, one course, and a single bite that does most of the convincing. W Gana sits up an alley in a Sinsa-dong building near Apgujeong Rodeo and runs one fixed dinner course that mixes grilled hanwoo cuts with seafood before landing on rice, soup, and dessert. The dish reviewers name first, and keep naming, is the 육회 우니 초밥, raw beef and sea urchin together in one sushi bite. A 2024 source counts the place among the three major hanwoo omakase counters in the Apgujeong area. Service is dinner only, 17:00 to 22:00, closed Mondays, with no lunch at all, so there is one window and you take it. The honest trade is scale and value: the bar holds six guests total, and portion size relative to the price is a recurring complaint, with one detailed reviewer preferring cheaper grilled-hanwoo rooms for repeat visits.

If you are booking one: Ushiya for the full cut-by-cut course, and the only counter here where a table for one is normal. The Damwoo if price matters and this is someone's first beef omakase. Isog Uhwa if the night wants a little spectacle and you are willing to fight for the date. W Gana if six seats, one unforgettable bite, and a hard dinner-only window are the point rather than the constraint.

One process note that covers all four. Each takes bookings through Catchtable or Naver rather than by phone, and at all four the reservation, not the menu, is the decision: Ushiya refuses walk-ins, The Damwoo's counter stops at around four, Isog Uhwa's monthly slots are contested the moment they drop, and W Gana seats six. Handle it first.
